POLONIA WOMEN
NATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY 2010/11

Polonia Ladies started life as a rectreational club in 1980. Founded by Bozena Zajaczkowska and her sister Grazyna, the team did not initially join a league, as coaching, provided by friends and players from the Men\'s team, was haphazard. In 1981 however, Julek Banasiewicz became the permanent coach and the team took on some structure and entered the London League. From \'81 to \'85, Julek helped the team gain promotion to London League Div 1 where the coaching was taken on by Hannah Walicka. In 1986 the Ladies entered the National League Division 3 and slowly worked their way up to Division 2 gaining promotion with Jurek Jankowski who took over the coaching role in 1988.

With annual training camps in Poland and Ireland, the Ladies solidified their position as a front runner in Division 2, and four years after Darek Seroczynski became coach, in the spring of 1996, the team finally gained promotion to Division 1.

Darek continued to coach through to 1999 despite a season out in 1994 where the team was lead by Melody McLaren. Player retirements however saw a slump in form and as Julian Mazgon-Ballard took over the helm in 1999 the Ladies slipped back to Division 2 and luckily managed to escape further demotion to Division 3. With new blood slowly coming into the side and the maturing and hard work of the remaining squad, the team were taken on by Ian Towers and surged back to the heights of Division 1 in 2002/3 having finished in 9th place only the year before.

In 2004/5 Donald Deans took over as coach and the team continued to build on past success under his leadership. For Donald\'s first season the club finished a very creditable 4th. In season 2005/6 the club went one better finishing 3rd.  Attracting new players to the squad and strengthening the team season 2006/7 saw Polonia finish the season in Div 1 the highest ever placing, league runners up. Polonia also reached the National Cup Semi-Finals and were invited to play in an international tournament in Italy where they finished 4th. This season also saw the club host the Junior Ireland Team. The Ladies have grown from strength to strength over the years, attracting players from all over the world to become one of the best known and respected clubs in English volleyball.
In the 2007/08 season, in spite of an average result in the league, the club reached the National Cup Finals for the first time in club history.  After an epic battle lasting 2hrs against University of London, the team eventually lost in a 3-2 resuts.

In the 2008/2009 season the team reached the National Shield Finals, unfortunately losing 2-3 against fellow team IMKA Polonia.

Mark Kontopoulos has now taken over the role of coach. A few University of London players have joined the team too, enlarging considerably the squad, which now consists of 16 players.
